MAYOR'S WELCOME   -   Show info / Hide info

As Mayor of Glendale, it is my great pleasure to announce the third annual One Book/One Glendale citywide reading event. One Book/One Glendale encourages us to read the same book at the same time to promote the value of reading and strengthen the unity of our city by engaging in this process together as neighbors and as citizens of Glendale.

I invite adults to read the wonderful new book, Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. I also invite children to read Poison Ivy by Glendale author Amy Koss. I encourage you to talk about the books at community book groups, meet the authors and attend free public programs at the Library. Please join me in embracing this community program.

The Honorable Frank Quintero
Mayor of Glendale

SHANGHAI GIRLS by Lisa See   -   Show info / Hide info

Lisa See's Website

This year's One Book / One Glendale program offers a fresh, fascinating adventure novel from beloved and bestselling author Lisa See. Her stunning new novel is the story of two sisters, two cultures, and the struggle to find a new life in the late 1930s Los Angeles while emotionally bound to China.

"Writing about the fictional Pearl and May in Shanghai Girls allowed me to step back to a time before I was born, to places I've loved, and to spend time in the way that only writers can with fragments of people -- their stories, the lilt of their laughs, the way they move across the floor -- who are gone from me now. I'll carry those people and places with me forever, and they'll always be a part of my writing, whether it's in a story set in a small Chinese village or one set right here in Los Angeles' Chinatown."

Amy Goldman Koss' Website

An American Government class stages a mock trial of three girls for their mistreatment of a classmate in this year's One Book / One Glendale for Younger Readers novel, Poison Ivy by Glendale author Amy Goldman Koss. But nothing turns out quite as expected as eight students give different versions of the same event. Amy keeps you turning pages with her passionate and funny story.

Amy Goldman Koss is the author of a number of books for young readers including, Side Effects, The Cheat, The Girls, and many more. She has a keen sense of humor and an ability to clearly define teenage characters that young readers can identify with. Adults can identify as well, since we never forget the experiences of high school that helped us grow up.
