SUMMER EVENT: Annie Bannanie
Saturday, July 5, 11 am
Join Annie Bananie as she uses twisted balloon costumes and props, along with the help of her audience actors, to transform your favorite stories into 'Balloon Theater', showing kids the fun and imagination that books can inspire. It's a high energy show with lots of audience participation, and an amazing surprise ending that you have to see to believe!

BUS SERVICE
The MTA Bus #92 can be accessed across the street from the Branch at two locations: 1) the northeast corner of Brand Blvd. and Stocker Ave. and 2) at the northwest corner of Brand Blvd. and Stocker Ave.

The Beeline can be accessed across the street, at the northeast corner of Stocker Ave. and Central Ave. (Near Ralph's Market)

HISTORY
The original Casa Verdugo Branch opened in 1926 as a "deposit station" on Central Avenue. In 1951 a new library building, along with a neighboring fire station, was erected at in its current location. The cost of the land, architect, construction, furniture, fixtures and landscaping, for the Branch alone, totaled $68,229.26. On April 9th of that year, Mayor George Wickham dedicated the building and Miss Carol Schmida of Hoover High School played an accordion solo.

NEIGHBORHOOD PROFILE
Casa Verdugo serves a mixed residential and business neighborhood that extends north to the city line, south to Lexington Avenue, east to Glendale Community College and west to a grouping of elementary, middle and high schools on Glenwood Road. The branch is surrounded by small and large businesses, banks, doctors offices, a large supermarket and the Red Lion Hotel. A Kaiser clinic is nearby. Single family homes, condominia and apartments compose local residences. On the same street as Casa Verdugo are four churches: Church of Christ, Scientist; Incarnation Catholic; Saint Marks Episcopal and Salem Lutheran. Also in the neighborhood is Sinai Jewish Temple. Public schools within walking distance are Mark Keppel Elementary, Toll Middle School and Hoover High School. Incarnation and Salem Lutheran churches have parochial schools.

Although there is a lot of weekday automobile traffic in the neighborhood, there are a great many pedestrians who conduct their daily chores on foot.

STAFF
The staff includes a Branch Librarian, a Children's Librarian, a Customer Service Representative, Library Pages and Volunteers. If you are interested in being a volunteer, contact the Branch Librarian by calling (818) 548-2047.

COLLECTION
The Casa Verdugo collection includes adult and juvenile books, paperbacks, periodicals, pamphlets and audio and video cassettes. The adult collection is particularly strong in the following subject areas: art history, best sellers, contemporary social issues, health, literacy, Los Angeles architecture, popular fiction and travel. The children's collection is strong in the following subject areas: American Indians, beginning readers, countries of the world, fairy and folktales and picture books.

Although the collection attempts to be inclusive for a medium size branch, one of its strengths is that it can access materials throughout the Glendale and Pasadena library systems, as well as through the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System. The Casa Verdugo Branch can order materials that are not owned by the branch.

COMPUTER CATALOG
Casa Verdugo is a branch of the Glendale Public Library system. Its Computer Catalog, which shows the collection of both the Glendale and the Pasadena libraries, is available through the Internet. For information about materials owned by the Casa Verdugo Branch, or to place a hold on materials that are checked out, please call (818) 548-2047 during open hours.

INTERNET
The Casa Verdugo Internet workstation is available to the public anytime that the branch is open, except when the staff is offering instructional lessons to the public. Patrons may use the Internet for 30 minutes, if other patrons are waiting to use it. If no one is waiting, patrons may use the Internet for 1 hour on any given day. The Casa Verdugo Internet Workstation was funded by the California State Library InfoPeople Project with funds provided by the federal Library Services and Construction Act. The goal of the project is to provide points of direct public access to the Internet in public libraries.

GLENDALE LIBRARY ONLINE RESOURCES
The Casa Verdugo Branch has computers available for patrons to access the Library's online catalog and a variety of online databases.

EQUIPMENT
The branch has a photocopying machine that charges $.10 per page.
Typewriters and word processors are not available.

MEETING ROOM RENTAL
Casa Verdugo's Meeting Room seats 35 people. Its equipment includes chairs, 3 long tables, a podium and a blackboard. The room is available for public rental during the library's open hours when it is not in use for library functions. The rental fees are:
Non-Profit Glendale Residents and Organizations: $20 for first three hours and $5 for each additional hour

Commercial Glendale Individuals, Businesses and Organizations: $40 for first three hours and $20 for each additional hour

Non-Profit Non-Glendale Residents and Organizations: $30 for first three hours and $10 for each additional hour

Commercial Non-Glendale Individuals, Businesses and Organizations: $60 for first three hours and $30 for each additional hour
